Hello,

Data is now a fundamental part of our economy, society and environment—we live in a data-enabled world. We also face vast societal challenges where data can work harder to help us make better decisions.

I’ve spent 20 years helping to make our data infrastructure useful to everyone: creating and leading businesses, bringing together the web, finance, policy, data, science, the environment, art and media. This has led to the creation of dozens of companies, the employment of 100’s of people, and £100Ms in measurable impact (including $137M in four years at the ODI) and helping to create $multi-billion markets* through the development of regulated markets such as the Open Banking Standard.

Working together, we have tackled complex challenges ranging from climate change to government transparency; digital supply-chains to open banking. My ambition is to create positive impact@web-scale on issues that require the coordination of multidisciplinary teams across private, public and third sectors. Harnessing the power of people and machines (‘collective intelligence’), our current Dgen Constellation projects include the internationalisation of Open Finance and making data work harder to deliver net-zero via IcebreakerOne.org (which launched at Davos in 2020 and delivered over $5M in grant-funded innovation in its first year of operation).

If you are interested in receiving ideas and notes of events, please subscribe to my personal newsletter.

Best,
Gavin

The Infra 2025 program is designed to scale smart grid solutions across Vitens. Innovation typically starts with just a good idea, beyond that this program is based on an approved business case. So we scale digital solutions to improve the process of water purification and distribution based on clearly articulated benefits that outweigh the costs of the operation.

STUART RUSSELL

STUART RUSSELL
Professor of Computer Science
University of California, Berkeley

Stuart Russell is a pioneer in the understanding and uses of artificial intelligence (AI), its long-term future, and its relation to humanity. He also is a leading authority on robotics and bioinformatics.

Stuart Russell is the author or coauthor of three books on knowledge, reasoning, and machine learning, including the standard textbook on artificial intelligence. Stuart Russell is a professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC-Berkeley and Adjunct Professor of Neurological Surgery at UC-San Francisco.

Artificial intelligence. AI is a machine’s ability to perceive its environment and use that information to maximise its chance at succeeding at some goal. All of the technologies behind artificial intelligence are evolving at exponential rates and are just now beginning to rocket up the curve. Soon artificially intelligent machines will be doing things we can barely conceive, in virtually every area of human business, life, and culture. Few people understand this future better than Stuart Russell, who wrote the standard textbook on AI (with coauthor Peter Norvig), now in its third edition.

Robotics. Stuart Russell is also a leading researcher in the practical applications of machine intelligence. If AI is the brain of the machine of the future, the robot is its body. Robots are taking over more and more functions that once required a human actor, with far-reaching consequences — and opportunities — for people, businesses, and society as a whole. He has focused recently on the threat of autonomous weaponry.

Biological information. As an Adjunct Professor of Neurological Surgery, Stuart has been researching computational physiology, with a current focus on Intensive Care Unit monitoring systems. He is a leader in the development of technologies that make sense of biological data and that apply this information in ways that advance human health.

Credentials. In addition to the positions already mentioned, Stuart Russell holds the SmithZadeh Chair in Engineering at UC-Berkeley and is Vice-Chair of the World Economic Forum’s Council on AI and Robotics. He is the recipient of many awards and held the Chaire Blaise Pascal in Paris from 2012 to 2014. He is a researcher at a number of research centers, including the Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research Lab (BAIR), the Berkeley Center for New Media (BCNM), and the Synthetic Biology Institute (SBI). He is the founder and Vice-President of Bayesian Logic, Inc., a data analysis start-up under contract with the UN to build a new Nuclear Test Ban Treaty global monitoring system.

TIMNIT GEBRU
Research Scientist & CoLead Ethical Artificial Intelligence
Former Google

Timnit is currently a research scientist at Google in the ethical AI team. Prior to that Timnit did a postdoc at Microsoft Research, New York City in the FATE (Fairness Transparency Accountability and Ethics in AI) group, where she studied algorithmic bias and the ethical implications underlying any data mining project (see this New York Times article for an example of my work). She received her PhD from the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, studying computer vision under Fei-Fei Li. Timnit’s thesis pertains to data mining large scale publicly available images to gain sociological insight, and working on computer vision problems that arise as a result. The Economist, The New York Times and others have covered part of this work. Some of the computer vision areas Timnit is interested in include fine-grained image recognition, scalable annotation of images, and domain adaptation. Prior to joining Fei-Fei’s lab she worked at Apple designing circuits and signal processing algorithms for various Apple products including the first iPad. Timnit also spent an obligatory year as an entrepreneur (as all Stanford undergrads seem to do). Her research was supported by the NSF foundation GRFP fellowship and the Stanford DARE fellowship

Gary Marcus, scientist, bestselling author, and entrepreneur, was CEO and Founder of the machine-learning startup Geometric Intelligence, recently acquired by Uber, and is known for his provocative and bold claims in artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and cognitive science. Trained by Steven Pinker, he received his PhD at MIT at age 23. His professional research, published in leading journals such as Science, Nature, Cognition, and Artificial Intelligence, has focused on the foundations of cognition in humans, animals and machines, spanning fields from developmental psychology to neuroscience to genetics to artificial intelligence. A special interest has been on the challenge of endowing machines with common sense.

He is also well-known for his writing for the general public, including frequent essays and op-eds for The New Yorker and The New York Times. His books include The Algebraic Mind, The Birth of the Mind, Kluge: The Haphazard Evolution of the Human Mind, The New York Times Bestseller, Guitar Zero and The Future of the Brain: Essays By The World’s Leading Neuroscientists.

In a 2012 essay for The New Yorker, he was perhaps the first person to publicly criticize deep learning, drawing on arguments he developed in his 2001 technical book The Algebraic Mind. More recently, in a 2018 arXiv article, Deep Learning: A Critical Appraisal, he asked whether deep learning might be “approaching a wall.” The challenges he laid out there were covered everywhere from The
New York Times to Wired to The Financial Times and Wall Street Journal.

In another provocative 2012 essay, Moral Machines, Marcus was the first to adapt “trolley problems” to driverless cars, anticipating much recent research on the ethics of AI. His next book, REBOOT: Getting to AI We Can Trust, to be published by Pantheon in Fall 2019, co-authored with Ernie Davis, calls for a fundamental rethinking of current approaches to artificial intelligence.

Her extensive experience includes: advisory and consultancy services to governments, regional economic communities, regional research networks, ministries of education, bilateral and multilateral agencies; management of  international research capacity development networks and global inter-agency groups on diverse themes on global education and on early childhood care and development; membership in boards of diverse intellectual and technical groups; editor in chief of one of the world’s most prestigious journal of education: PROSPECTS;  as well as founder and editor in chief of one of the most prestigious education and learning magazines: IBE INFOCUS

In recent years, she gained eminence as a global thought leader on futures education and learning; the future of education and work; and future competences all global citizens require to thrive in rapidly changing 21st century work and life contexts. She is an avid advocate for advancing the engagement of the public and private sectors, especially in technology and the sciences, in shaping the future of education and learning, and in shaping the future through education and learning. She continues to lead global intellectual dialogue on ensuring that education and learning systems attain and sustain: credible scientific underpinnings; future development-relevance; agility to adapt; equitable quality; resource efficiency; technology-savvy; and sustainability. She strongly holds that these parameters of education and learning systems are an inescapable foundation for broad-based and future-forward human resources development, and for the long-term human capital accumulation required to assure every global citizen holistic development, equity of opportunities, and ultimately, fulfillment.

Professor Marope calls for stronger private sector and foundation engagement in the transformation of education and learning systems into life-long-learning systems in their own right before they can be counted on to develop effective life-long-learners with agility to adapt and the resultant resilience for unpredictable futures. She holds that such transformation demands: 21st century education and learning systems to have capacity for better use of science, emerging technologies to address persisting challenges, and of big data to guide and even predict their futures; rigorous systemic diagnostics; research; foresight; and constant self-renewal. The transformation also demands normative and operational tools; financial, technical and political capital; as well as enabling institutional landscapes that currently do not exist.

Professor Marope works relentlessly to develop normative and operational tools as well to garner the political, financial and technical capital required to attain and sustain future-forward education and learning systems. In future, she seeks to intensify engagement with the private sector, and foundations in convening and mobilizing global talent and intellectual pool; as well as the political, technical, technological, moral, ethical, and financial capital required to create institutions that can enable future transformation of education and learning systems, as well as the world of work that can genuinely serve all.

Throughout her career, Professor Marope has built extensive experience at all levels and types of education, learning, and training systems. She is also highly experienced in the knowledge creation, brokerage and management required to underpin system transformation. Her publications cover a wide range of areas including: global norms and standard setting tools; system diagnostic tools; system prototypes; all sub-sectors of education, learning, and training systems; future global competences; education and development; capacity development; and award winning Setswana novels.

Head of Data Science Data and Analytics

I am looking for structure in complex systems and as a trained theoretical Astrophysicist I have done so from many different perspectives. At the end of the day, I was always drawn to information technology. For Daimler/Mercedes-Benz Cars I am therefore deploying machine-learning based solutions to the company’s data bases to, ultimately, fully optimise financial processes within Daimler/MBC. Key to this is the implementation of a positive data culture for all employees. As the Head of Data Science for the Data & Analytics team, I am particularly interested in advancing deep learning techniques for data analysis, representation learning, decision making, process acceleration and privacy protection.

In 2010 I was awarded my PhD in Physics from the University of Heidelberg (Germany) and worked as a research fellow at Caltech and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena/California (USA). I held Marie Curie Fellowships at the University of Oxford (UK) and at INAF Bologna (Italy) and taught as a lecturer at University College Oxford (UK). In my free time, I am particularly interested in the latest HPC trend, bit-level code optimisation and higher mathematics.

My professional experience encompasses an intricate maze of highly diverse business and technology domains, and international locations across North America, Europe, and Japan. I’ve gained an insider perspective from an wide-ranging roster of companies, ranging from Bay Area late-stage startups experiencing an explosive growth, to private equity fund, to founding and bootstrapping my own company, to now leading a diverse IT portfolio for a traditional multi-billion dollar company, transforming to adjust to ever-changing market conditions. During my career, I’ve built some of the first VoIP cloud-based contact centers, invented Visual IVR for iOS, created Visual Voicemail (VVM) on Symbian and Blackberry OS ahead of iPhone’s VVM. I’ve built contextual communication service mashups that combined a variety of mobile, telecom, front-office and back office applications to deliver a game-changing carrier-grade PaaS and VAS for business communications, pioneered context-aware, brokered, multi-modal, and multi-platform interactive CaaS for mobile operators. My Enterprise Telephony Server was voted one of the most outstanding products on Microsoft campus and later became a part of MSFT Lync server(now Skype4Business). Today I am leading a massive transformation of technology debt towards cloud-based microservices, and implementation of Data Management, Data Governance and cloud-based Data Management Platform.
